The Avon & Hills Mining Awareness Group (AHMAG) and local community members are opposed to plans by Chinese owned Yankuang bauxite resources proposals to strip mine for bauxite a mere 57 km from Perth's CBD.

Residents for Responsible Mining (R4RM) is another growing community group formed to address the concerns of residents negatively impacted by mining activities in the Darling Scarp where Bauxite Resources Limited (BRL) started mining on an extractive industries license back in 2009. Then due to a number of different reasons, the stage 2 mine plans which included a full Public Environmental Review (PER) was withdrawn from the EPA, the mine was closed and they left the area.
